#365Insects 43: #Ampulex compressa (Fabricius, 1781)

If you’re familiar with @cwzimmer’s writing, then you probably know all about the Emerald Cockroach Wasp and it’s ability to chemically lobotomize cockroaches with a remarkably adept hypodermic stinger, and its propensity for leading said cockroach to a grizzly, subterranean doom by tugging on its antenna (if this is all news to you, start here: http://bit.ly/1Xoty6P). What you might not know is that this species was intentionally introduced to Hawaii to control cockroaches on the islands, an introduction that failed spectacularly when the wasps were too territorial and reproduced too slowly to impact roach populations.
