This male Mountain Midge is one weird fly. You’ll need to look close to find the head (it’s practically under the thorax), while the huge, papery wings are impossible to miss, and the antennae that are many times the length of its body may be confused for legs (this specimen’s antenna is actually broken, and would normally have curled up and away more than twice the current length). Aquatic as larvae in fast flowing mountain rivers, this family of flies is now believed to be right at the base of the fly family tree and sister to all the other living flies.
