This is not just an old, pretty picture. Entomologists have used such drawings to identify insects. It is essential since, for example, the Lauxaniidae currently comprise some 1800 described species across more than a hundred genera.

These old works & illustrations are definitely still used today for new research. Beautiful illustrations make taxonomic research a pleasure!
