While this might look like a really knobby scarab beetle, the Forked Fungus Beetle is actually a type of darkling beetle. Commonly found an bracket and shelf fungi (the big ones that stick off the sides of tree trunks), males use the horns on their nose and back to defend mating grounds and to knock each other females while mating. Unlike some other battling beetles, bigger horns aren’t a necessity because males guard areas in social groups, meaning less-endowed males can still get chances to reproduce.
