Welcome to a new challenge I’m attempting for 2016: #365Insects! Every day this year I’ll be sharing a specimen from the University of Guelph Insect Collection.


1: #Dasymutilla fulvohirta (Cresson, 1938)

Commonly called velvet ants, these insects turn out to be not-so-closely related to ants. Of course, the other name they commonly go by is Cow Killers, a slightly more accurate moniker for females like this one who pack quite a wallop with their sting.
