ROM Reporters Meets Emily Graslie!
Today we met with Emily Graslie, host of thebrainscoop, over Skype. The Brain Scoop is a YouTube channel that makes vlogs about natural and cultural history at the Field Museum in Chicago, where she is the Chief Curiosity Correspondent.
She started this channel when she was a volunteer at the University of Montana’s Philip L. Wright Zoological Museum, because she wanted to share the knowledge and importance of museums. She said that most of her ideas stem from hearing about the goings on at the museum from a weekly gathering of her coworkers and friends.
We asked her some questions about the show. Emily said that the grossest thing she has ever seen was a dead wild llama with a tooth infection that was a giant mess. On the other hand, she said that the coolest thing she had ever held was a vial with 4.5+ billion year old carbon from a meteorite, and that the coolest place she has ever been sent to by the museum was Peru. In Peru she worked with a group of scientists whose job was to find biodiversity that could persuade the government to conserve important animals and habitats.
We were so excited to meet with Emily through the magic of the internet. All of her answers to our questions were awesomely thorough. As someone who studied art and drama, but is also a really fantastic science educator and journalist, she’s a great example of what being in a museum is all about: finding the exciting places where art and history and science all meet with delicious gooey goodness…. (it still has brains on it.)
