Maira gloriosa, a species of predatory robber fly (family Asilidae). Adept at flight; great vision. Stabs its prey with a needle sharp proboscis and injects the chosen target with a saliva of digestive enzymes, then sucks up the liquified organs. Mmmmetal. (at The Field Museum)
KILL IT WITH FIRE
THIS IS WHY WE NEED SPIDERS
FLIES ARE JUST GROSS AND DISGUSTINGY’know… most spiders ingest their prey in a very similar manner, e.g. injecting their meal with a digestive enzyme and then sucking up the goodness up like a gooey insect milkshake
Humans are gross and disgusting.
Flies are cool.
Fun fact: some robber flies pluck spiders from their webs and turn them into takeout.
So, yeah, it’s flies all the way down. Or up, depending on how you imagine food web directionality.
